My friend Janis asked people with metastatic breast cancer to share their nominations for the dumbest things people had said to them about their illness.
I have to say I am pretty lucky. I’ve heard of few of these, but people have been exceedingly thoughtful and compassionate. But as you can see, that’s not the case for everyone!

That’s terrific! I had to laugh. I got the essiac tea suggestion today. God love ’em they’re well-meaning (usually).
My favorite was the young grocery clerk who dug himself a deeper hole with every question he asked me. A compete stranger, asking for my diagnosis and prognosis while scanning my cereal.

This is great! I stopped counting at 12, the same things said to me, I didn’t realize it was so universal. 🙂 Like Kate, I had a similar thing happen to me while scanning my groceries, the fellow started out with “no one dies of breast cancer anymore” … fortunately he only had two feet to put in his mouth. I hope I set him straight, just a little.
Oh my gosh! People say the darndest things. I’ve had some doozies myself.

The dumbest thing someone has said to me: “You must not have prayed with enough of a sincere heart. God will cure you if you just ask with pure intent.” … and…. that’s not all. There’s this one… “Don’t worry. I’ll pray for you. God listens to me! He has cured others I’ve prayed for.” Not only is this line of advice dumb, but it’s downright demeaning, insulting and arrogant, But need I say? Blasphemous!
